History of Royal Cavaliers King Charles Spaniel

The first Cavaliers were sent to the USA in 1952. The breed has become increasingly popular, but it was not until 1996 that the Cavalier achieved full recognition by the AKC as the 140th AKC breed. Cavaliers date back as far as the fifteenth century in Europe. They were referred to as "comforter spaniels" as they would snuggle on their owner's laps. They had a lot of association with the royal families of England. Mary Queen of Scotts and Charles I, Charles II, and the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, all helped to popularize this charming little dog.
The breed is highly affectionate. Most dogs of the breed are playful, extremely patient and eager to please. As such, dogs of the breed are usually good with children and other dogs. A well-socialized Cavalier will not be shy about socializing with much larger dogs.
Grooming
Despite their elegant, silky coats, the Cavaliers do not need a lot of care. Just brushing out about once a week so their hair donesn't "mat". Bathing can be done every couple weeks and they don't shed that much considering their long, full hair.
